June 26th, 1997 – Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone is released
Today in history, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in the U.K., creating millions of future adults who would spend far too much time wondering which fictional house they belonged in.
Back then, Harry Potter wasn't Harry Potter. He was just a character in a debut novel that most people had never heard of. The manuscript had been rejected by a dozen publishers before finally being picked up, and the first hardcover print run consisted of just 500 copies. It's hard to imagine now, considering the series would go on to sell more than 600 million books worldwide and become one of the biggest cultural phenomena of the last three decades.

❓ Trivia
Just like some animals hibernate in the winter, what is the scientific term for animals that go into a dormant state to survive intense summer heat?
P.S. We’re now breaking down the answers at the end of each edition, so you get a little more insight.
The Day Aliens Hijacked TV
Imagine you're sitting on the couch on a Saturday evening in 1977. The kids are watching cartoons, you're half-paying attention, and suddenly the cartoon voices drown out and a unknown voice takes over.

On November 26, 1977, viewers of Southern Television in southern England experienced one of the strangest broadcast interruptions in history. The station's audio suddenly began to distort before being completely replaced by a bizarre voice that sounded mechanical and otherworldly. The speaker identified itself as "Vrillon," a representative of the Ashtar Galactic Command, a name associated with UFO lore and New Age beliefs. For nearly six minutes, the voice delivered a message to humanity, warning of the dangers of war, urging people to abandon their weapons, and encouraging a path toward peace and spiritual growth. The message claimed that Earth was entering a new age and that humanity needed to change its ways to avoid disaster. While the television picture never changed and continued showing the regular broadcast, viewers listening at home heard what sounded like an alien transmission interrupting their Saturday evening programming. Not surprisingly, some were amused, some were confused, and a few were genuinely alarmed.

Ashtar Sheran - Supreme Commander of the Ashtar Galactic Command
One viewer later recalled that the voice sounded "metallic" and unlike a normal television announcer. Another described the experience as eerie because the message was delivered so calmly and confidently while the normal television image continued uninterrupted.
The weirdest part is that nobody knows who did it. Investigators determined that the video signal remained untouched while someone managed to overpower the audio being transmitted from a relay station. Pulling off the stunt would have required technical knowledge and some serious planning, especially in an era long before hackers could wreak havoc from a laptop. Despite investigations and decades of speculation, the culprit was never identified.
Of course, there is no evidence that aliens actually interrupted British television. Unlike many UFO stories though, this wasn't a handful of people claiming they saw something in the sky. Thousands of people heard the exact same message at the exact same time. The mystery isn't whether the interruption happened, it absolutely did. The mystery is who managed to pull it off and why they never took credit for one of the greatest broadcast pirate in history.

The Holdovers
If you're looking for a movie that feels like they don't make them anymore, The Holdovers is worth a watch. Set at a New England boarding school during Christmas break in 1970, the film follows a grumpy history teacher, a troubled student, and the school cook who are all stuck on campus with nowhere else to go. What starts as an unlikely pairing turns into a funny, heartfelt story about loneliness, friendship, and finding family in unexpected places. Anchored by a fantastic performance from Paul Giamatti, The Holdovers has the charm of a classic character-driven movie and the kind of emotional payoff that sticks with you long after the credits roll.

🎰 Trivia Breakdown
While many animals hibernate to survive winter, some do the opposite. Aestivation is a period of dormancy that helps animals endure extreme heat and drought during the summer. Species such as lungfish, desert snails, crocodiles, frogs, and certain salamanders slow their metabolism, reduce their activity, and often burrow underground or seal themselves in protective cocoons to conserve water. Some lungfish can even survive for months, or years, buried in dried mud until rain returns.
